1. A method of preserving a fuel cell membrane electrode assembly in which a catalyst electrode is arranged on each surface of a polymer electrolyte in a layered manner, the method comprising:
covering the membrane electrode assembly with a flexible polymeric film with moisture permeability of 0.1 g/m2/day or less and oxygen permeability of 0.1 cc/m2/day/atm or less;
providing a space around a portion of the polymer electrolyte, which projects beyond the catalyst electrode; and
filling the space with inert gas.
