1. A process for the production of aluminium oxide dispersions, comprising mixing a high-surface-area, pyrogenically-produced aluminium oxide, having a BET specific surface area of more than 115 m2/g and a Sears number of more than 8 ml/2 g, with water and one or more of the components selected from the group consisting of inorganic acids, organic acids, inorganic bases, organic bases, salts, buffer systems, ionic surfactants, non-ionic surfactants, polyelectrolytes, polymers, dispersing agents, stabilizers and biocides, setting a pH value of 2 to 8 with acid, and subjecting the mixture to controlled shearing forces for a period of about 45 minutes or more sufficient to form a dispersion havng a mean particle size distribution of d50<150 nm.
